A Tonic for The Times

Right now, a very helpful belief, a grand positive delusion if you like, is this: the work you do as a commercially smart thought leader is a tonic for exactly the times we find ourselves in.

Listen to the blog here.

Stay with me.

There's a lens gaining traction called BANI. Brittle, anxious, non-linear, incomprehensible. It's not describing the world out there. It's describing the experience of living inside it. The fragility people feel. The anxiety that comes from seeing everything and being able to control nothing. The sense that the old rules don't quite apply anymore.

That's your client's inner world right now.

What BANI is actually asking of people is this: steadiness over speed, presence over prediction, the ability to hold a question without needing to immediately resolve it. And that's exactly what a good thought leader has always done.

Cometh the time, cometh the person.

What if this moment in history, as crazy and entangled as it is, is the one your entire body of work has been quietly preparing you for? All of your lived experience. All of your hard-won expertise. All of it pointing to now.

Because here's the commercial reality underneath it all. This is the ultimate "help me with my big issues and I'll pay you generously" moment. When you show up with genuine clarity, not false certainty, actual clarity, you are genuinely rare.

At Thought Leaders Business School, we teach that empathy is the key to getting a practice humming. Because expertise without empathy gives you the history of clocks when all your client wanted to know was "what's the time?"

The tonic isn't more information. It's understanding. It's someone who can read the room, name what's really happening, and help people move anyway.

This week, one question worth sitting with: how is what you share, teach, talk and write about needed now more than at any other time in history?

Because I think it is. And I think you already know the answer.
